The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia is using DMW's virtual Classroom to emulate the challenges of hearing loss and stuttering.
Project Title:
Simulated Activities of Naturalistic Discourse
Institution:
Children's Hospital of Philadelphia
Primary Investigator:
Joseph G. Donaher
Coordinator of the Stuttering Program
Center for Childhood Communication

Status:
Software Development in Progress, alpha delivered

Overview:
Children with developmental disabilities routinely demonstrate targeted skills in isolated activities prior to not being able to perform the same task as well in functional, real-life situations. Primary Researcher Dr. Joseph Donaher hopes to find new ways to bridge the gap between clinical and real world performance in children with hearing and speech disabilities.

Objectives:
Donaher and his team will begin the study by using a customized version of the ClinicaVR(Classroom) which will emulate the effects of different types of hearing loss and simulate various hearing augmentation technologies. The goal is to provide a simulated environment for teachers, parents and practitioners to better understand the unique challenges children with these developmental disabilities face.

Donaher hopes to apply both the experience and data gathered in this initial study to further evolve current rehabilitation strategies into more effective rehabilitation tools.
